Bernard Hopkins Next Fight Will Be Against Chad Dawson

History was made Saturday night when Bernard Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KO) defeated Jean Pascal (26-2-1, 16 KO)  to become the oldest man to ever win a major boxing championship. But Hopkins isn't done yet. During his in-ring post-fight interview, Hopkins made it clear that he intended to keep fighting until he was close to 50. We do know that Hopkins has two more HBO fights on his contract, so it's a certainty that we'll see him fight at least through 2012.
Hopkins' next opponent will be "Bad" Chad Dawson (30-1, 17 KO). Dawson rebounded from his first ever career loss, a technical decision against Pascal in August 2010, by picking up a decision win over Adrian Diaconu on the undercard of the Pascal/Hopkins bout.
Dawson actually had a rematch clause with Pascal that he set aside to allow the Hopkins/Pascal rematch to take place. That move put him in position to get a shot at the winner of the main event on HBO and promoter Bob Arum made it clear after the event that Hopkins would either face Dawson, or not fight on HBO.
That doesn't seem to be a problem for Hopkins as he said he was fighting Dawson next, then wanted Lucian Bute in his next fight.
Under the guidance of new trainer Emanuel Steward we were told we would see a new Dawson, one who used his tremendous physical talents to fight more aggressively and end fights. Instead, it seemed that it was more of the same. He jabbed and used his reach, but rarely opened up and gave what was roundly considered a disappointing performance. He also showed defensive deficiencies, getting clipped while backing up straight and occasionally getting roughed up by the much smaller Diaconu.

Bernard Hopkins Vs. Jean Pascal II: Hopkins Becomes Oldest Man To Win Title With Decision Victory

Bernard Hopkins made history at the Bell Centre in Montreal by becoming the oldest man in boxing history to win a major world championship. Hopkins bested defending light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal by unanimous decision in their rematch of their controversial December 2010 bout. Heading into the night the record for the oldest man to win a boxing title was held by George Foreman for his KO of Michael Moorer.
Hopkins came out to start the fight in his usual form, taking it easy in the early rounds and looking to figure out the rhythm of the fight while the always aggressive Pascal came forward throwing hard shots. In round four it was Pascal that landed a hard punch early that appeared to hurt Hopkins. Unlike their first bout, a fight which saw Bernard knocked down twice, Hopkins was able to stay on his feet and avoid taking too much damage. Starting with round five, the complexion of the fight changed.
Hopkins started to fire his straight right hand and land it with regularity as Pascal appeared to fade. The straight right hand would be Bernard's go-to punch as the fight wore on and Pascal was never able to make the adjustment to avoid that shot. Jean's endurance appeared to be an issue as the fight wore on and he missed more and more with his wild power punches while Bernard's simple attack and skillful (and old-timey) rough house tactics frustrated the younger champion.
The pattern would repeat as the fight wore on into the championship rounds. In the twelfth round, with Pascal seemingly needing a knockout to get his hand raised, the champion came out hard and stunned his older foe with some hard shots. Unfortunately for Jean Pascal, he did not have it in him to continue the assault and Hopkins made it to the final bell still upright.
SB Nation had scored the bout 116-112 for Hopkins and when the official scorecards were read, they seemed to be in agreement. The judges had the bout 115-113, 116-112 and 115-114 all for the new light heavyweight champion of the world, "The Executioner" Bernard Hopkins.
It was a monumental night for boxing, one that showed that there is more to the fight game than power punching and speed. Bernard Hopkins, a man who made his entire career on ring savvy and the ability to control the spacing and pacing of a fight, truly did it his way. A fact that the boxing world will forever remember.

The final round was more of what the fight had been to that point. Hopkins attempted to keep Pascal from landing, but this time Pascal was able to land a few punches in a flurry before Hopkins came back with a shot of his own.
Suddenly a hard right hand stunned Hopkins but Bernard was able to clinch up and walk around the ring and remain on his feet. Pascal did not follow up when he had his much older foe on rubber legs and it allowed Hopkins to survive to the final bell in a fight that it appeared Bernad had clearly won.
SB Nation scored the round 10-9 Pascal. Making the fight 116-112 Hopkins on our card after eleven rounds.
The official judges scorecards read 115-113, 116-112 and 115-114 all for Bernard Hopkins.

Pascal was clearly desperate as the bout hit the championship rounds. Hopkins had taken the bout over with his jab and right hands while using defense to take away Pascal's offense. Pascal's best effort through the round was wading forward and making it clear that he was trying, but he wasn't landing clean punches.
As the round ended it appeared that we were one short round away from seeing Bernard Hopkins make history with a light heavyweight championship victory.

Both men came out in the tenth round looking to establish their jabs. Pascal would find a left hook and an uppercut early in the round, looking to find some answer to the timing and rough style of Hopkins.
For the second straight round, Hopkins connected with a punch and Pascal slipped, touching his glove to the mat. The ref called it a slip again, but the main takeaway was that Hopkins had Pascal confused and those right hands were catching him offguard if nothing else.
The round ended with both men flurrying but neither man doing any damage.
SB Nation scored the round 10-9 Hopkins. Making the fight 97-93 Hopkins on our card after ten rounds.

Early in round nine Hopkins would land a punch as Pascal slipped that appeared to be a knockdown. The referee called it a slip and allowed the action to continue, but it didn't stop Bernard from going back to his right hand.
Another stinging right hand exposed the poor defense of Pascal but Jean would finally land a hook late in the round to attempt to steal the round.
Hopkins still did the better work as Pascal was badly tired by the time the round came to a close.

Before the start of round seven, Hopkins dropped down and started doing push-ups to continue getting in Pascal's head. Then, once the round started, he tagged Pascal with a hard right hand. By this point in the fight it was clear that Pascal was having trouble mentally with Bernard, but his physical gifts were keeping him in the fight.
Pascal missed wildly with some power shots but Hopkins continued to land the better punches of the round. It was all jabs, left hooks and lead right hands by Hopkins while Pascal was forced to resort to clinching as Bernard outlanded him close to three times over.
SB Nation scored the round 10-9 Hopkins. Making the fight 67-66 Hopkins on our card after seven rounds.

At the Bell Centre in Montreal, the 46-year-old Bernard Hopkins was attempting to become the oldest man to ever win a major boxing championship. Standing in his way was the man he fought to a controversial draw in Decmeber, Jean Pascal.
As round six started, the point of the fight where Hopkins had clearly taken over the first fight had come and it did appear that Hopkins' work rate was increasing while Pascal was slightly fading. The straight right hand became a weapon for Bernard over the round.
The referee had trouble with the fighters separating from the clinch receiving a very stern warning from the referee. Hopkins continued to make the fight rough and just the right kind of dirty as it wore on.
The right hands from Hopkins were the best punches of the round but his best work was getting in Pascal's head, leading to Jean following him back to his corner, jawing at the veteran.
SB Nation scored the round 10-9 Hopkins. Making the fight 57-57 even on our card after six rounds.

After being stunned at the end of round four Hopkins attempted to keep the early minute slow but it was Pascal coming forward throwing a very hard body shot and then a solid right hand. Hopkins got dirty as is his style and lead with his head, landing a headbutt which led to Pascal clinching. It was the kind of dirty action that is to be expected as the rounds wear on.
Hopkins got inside with a sneaky right hand mid-way through the round that was his best punch in several rounds.
It was far from a great round for either man but Hopkins likely took it on ring control.

Bernard Hopkins Vs. Jean Pascal II Undercard Results: Chad Dawson Scores Unanimous Decision Victory

On the undercard of the rematch between Jean Pascal and Bernard Hopkins, Chad Dawson returned to the ring for the first time since his August 2010 loss to the evening's main eventer, Pascal. Standing in the opposite corner was Adrian Diaconu. It was believed by many heading into the night that a Dawson win would have "Bad" Chad in line to face the Pascal/Hopkins winner.
The much taller Dawson looked to use his jab through the early rounds. When Dawson would see fit to open up with his offense he would occasionally leave himself open to the counter power shots of Diaconu. Still, the biggest shot of the first half of the fight was a hard left hook from Dawson that stunned Diaconu at the end of round two.
The fight fell into a pattern of Dawson throwing the jab and occassionally trying to unload a combination before setting back on the outside. It appeared that Chad was winning the majority of the rounds but in round nine it was Diaconu that landed a hard flurry that had Dawson shaken. HBO had the fight scored six rounds to three after nine, favoring Dawson.
It appeared that a knockout was the only way for Diaconu to pull off the upset, outside of some home horrible "hometown scoring." Knowing this, Diaconu came out hard in the final round throwing hard shots trying to find a way to get the stoppage. I wouldn't come though and the fight went to the judge's scorecards.
There would be no home cooking as the official scorecards read 117-111, 118-110, 116-112 all for Chad Dawson.
It wasn't a thrilling performance and Dawson looked to either lack motivation or get too careless at times, but he got the much needed win to rebound from his first loss and should be right back in title contention.
